Enhancing the Learning Experience in Stepaside Educate Together Secondary School

As a diverse school growing in numbers each year, Stepaside Educate Together Secondary School decided to equip each of their students with a Windows device and Office 365 for education to facilitate the development of the key skills they would need to achieve their potential in school, the workplace and beyond. The impact of this has completely transformed the way teaching and learning happens in the school as Principal Barbara Mulhall tells us:

“We’re living in a technological age. We feel it’s really important for students to learn how to use technology effectively and how to manage it. We’ve had the technology embedded from the very beginning and the impact it’s had on our culture is huge. Our students are encouraged to develop resources with the teacher to expand their learning which we feel is a much more progressive way.”

Improved Collaboration and Communication using Office 365

As a progressive school who put their students’ holistic development at the core of what they do, students at Stepaside Educate Together Secondary School use Office 365 apps everyday to clarify learning content and to enhance communication and collaboration with students and peers as this student explains:

“We have multiple softwares and desktop apps in every class like OneNote, Teams, PowerPoint and Word and that allows us to creatively collaborate with different classmates and allows us to get in contact with teachers if we need assistance. It enables us to get the work done and on time and it’s all in one place. Whenever we need lesson content, objectives or guidance on what needs to be done for class we can just go on to our computers and check it out.”

The result of this is that the school aren’t concerned about any potential closures as their virtual learning environment is long established and students are already so comfortable communicating and learning using this platform as Barbara Mulhall explains:

“Our students won’t be affected by any school closures as they are used to learning independantly, facilitated by using Office 365 software and our virtual learning environment.”

Enabling Independant, Real World Learning

Stepaside Educate Together Secondary School believe strongly in fostering independent learning in their students and using a 1:1 device model has greatly enabled this as Colin Doyle explains:

“We use an enquiry based learning approach. We run phenomenon based learning weeks where our students apply real world phenomena to things that they’re learning in the classroom and understanding that the curriculum has real world applications. That would be very difficult to do without technology.”

“It’s made the students more engaged in the classroom and it allows more for more opportunities for students to work cooperatively. Because the students can work independently facilitated by the technology it allows the teacher the time to work with individual students in the class and to be by their side working through the learning with them. This means our students are exploring the content rather than having it given to them or reading it themselves and they’re much more likely to remember it then when it comes to exam time.”
