Case Study - Malahide Community School iPad Refresh Programme
New technology enables enhanced learning environment and outcomes in Malahide Community School.
"The new Junior Cycle requires us to develop a different set of skills in our students and it is important that our teachers are demonstrating these skills themselves and are confident in the development of these skills in our students. We wanted to make sure that the teachers have access to the newest and most up to date devices to ensure that our students can benefit fully from technology for learning.” – Jean Ward, Deputy Principal Malahide Community School

Enhanced Learning in Malahide Community School
With 1200 students each using iPad for education in both junior and senior cycle, Malahide Community School is accessing and engaging all learners in their school using this technology in impressive and innovative ways. Deputy Principal Jean Ward says using a 1:1 iPad model in the school has greatly enhanced the overall learning environment:
“There’s been a huge increase in student collaboration both during and outside of classtime and students are more connected to their teachers and their learning through their digital engagement. Staff have also been enabled to collaborate more easily. Using their iPads and Cloud sharing they upload and share resources, ideas and pedagogy and collaborate on planning together.”
Teacher and year head Melanie Browne is delighted with the way that their 1:1 mobile learning programme has changed the way she teaches: “As teachers, we are now engaged in much more active learning methods in our lessons. For example I can flip the classroom so that students watch a video and discuss the topic with each other via technology at home. Students can also visit locations they’re studying using 3-D interactive Maps or explain new concepts and interview people who lived during a certain era using Plotagon.”
Malahide Community School is in it's 6th year using 1:1 digital mobile learning, with all students and teachers benefitting from a more accessible, enhanced learning environment. Melanie explains:
“iPad is an excellent tool for differentiation. Students can photograph the board, type or voice record notes and can present their work in a variety of methods that best suit their learning style using Pic Collage, video, drawing, interviews or presentations on iPad.”
Increased Learning Outcomes
When the school embarked on their digital journey in 2003 they took the decision to adopt more interactive teaching methodologies and all 1st year students were given an iPad each. Since then the school has seen significant benefits from adopting Apple technology including: increased student engagement, better than anticipated test scores and increased opportunities to build key 21st Century Learning skills. Jean says that the results speak for themselves:
“After using the iPads for a few years, we carried out a review of the impact on student learning outcomes. We found that, when comparing like with like, students who had access to an iPad performed better than students without the iPad.”
“While we cannot definitively say that the iPads were solely responsible for the difference, we do recognise that the iPad and related technology enhanced teaching/learning were the only significant changes between the 2 groups who were compared.”
The school are keen to embrace the changes to the new Junior Cycle programme and to build the necessary skills in their students to enable them to thrive in the 21st Century work environment. Deputy Principal Jean Ward has seen the benefits of the schools 1:1 iPad programme already in senior cycle:
“Students who have already graduated have reported back that their transition to 3rd level was made significantly easier compared to others on their courses as they were already used to the high level of digital engagement which is the norm at 3rd level.”
The Benefits of the iPad Refresh Scheme
In order to get the best from their devices for learning, Malahide Community College decided to avail of Wriggle's iPad Refresh Scheme in order to cost-effectively upgrade their technology. In September 2018, they refreshed 100 iPads for teachers, upgrading their old iPads to the new iPad 6th generation and were delighted with the improved benefits from their new devices.
Deputy Principal Jean Ward explains the importance of having up to date devices in school :
"The new Junior Cycle requires us to develop a different set of skills in our students and it is important that our teachers are demonstrating these skills themselves and are confident in the development of these skills in our students. We wanted to make sure that the teachers have access to the newest and most up to date devices to ensure that our students can benefit fully from technology for learning.
Having the latest iPads in the classroom means they are compatible with all the latest apps for education and they can now use enhanced accessibility tools and other features that weren't available to them before like Airdrop and Apple Classroom. Teachers can also now mirror using all the same features and capabilities the student’s iPads have so we are ensuring that we’re getting the best use of the iPads in the classroom."
The introduction of Apple Classroom which is compatible with newer iPads means that teachers can guide students with iPads through a lesson, see their progress and keep them on track while Airdrop enables sharing of documents in seconds for easy classroom assessment and workflow.
Jean acknowledges that it can be challenging for schools to keep up when it comes to technology but has found Wriggle's Refresh Scheme to be a big help with this "We needed to find a sustainable way to finance staff iPads and availing of Wriggle's subscription plan means that we pay a monthly fee, enabling us to keep the iPads current without the huge financial outlay of a purchase scheme. When we traded in our old devices through the iPad Refresh Scheme, we got credit back to put towards our new iPads. The process was easy and it definitely made it much more affordable."
“Replacing devices is part of the school's ongoing commitment to enhancing the teaching and learning environment and getting the best from the many tools and features built into the iPad. Putting new devices in teachers hands has made an enormous difference in our classrooms. In future, teacher iPads will always be as up to date as the student iPads. We have ‘future-proofed’ our 1:1 iPad programme.”
