Now in their 12th year of their iPad student device program, Coláiste na Mí continually strive to review and enhance the teaching and learning experience for students and teachers alike.

Whilst the benefits of a safe managed iPad in school were abundantly clear, parents wanted greater ability to control what their children could access on their iPad when working online at home so Jamf Safe Internet was the obvious solution.

Ensuring a Safe Progressive Learning Environment at School

For 900 students in Coláiste na Mi, having their own iPad each for learning has empowered them to take charge of their own learning and showcase this in the way that suits them best.

“We want our students to become independent learners and problem solvers, be creative and be able to work with others which are skills they will take into third level and the world of work” says Michael McCarthy, Deputy Principal of the school. “By using the iPad in the way we do in the school those skills are promoted and enhanced from when the students come in in first year.”

With such a large number of iPads in use in the school, the school team at Colaiste na Mí needed support with safely managing their iPads and working with Wriggle has taken that workload from the school management team.

“Wriggle manage all of our iPads using Jamf School software” shares Michael. “What that allows for us is for us to ensure that there are only a certain amount of school approved apps that the students can access, there’s no access to the app store and that all iPads can be managed and controlled.”

Ensuring Online Safety at Home

Whilst inappropriate websites are blocked in school through the ETB’s firewall, parents in the school wanted to be able to ensure a similar level of security and filtering at home.

“The on-device content filtering with Jamf Safe Internet works both in school and at home and gives us great peace of mind that the students can’t get access to any inappropriate content online at home, or at school.”

Not only has Jamf Safe Internet allowed the school to go as far as they deem appropriate to ensure students safety online, it also blocks malicious cyber attacks and gives the school great flexibility to turn on and off permissions to websites at the click of a button.

“As a standard all malware and scamware sites are blocked and we can whitelist of blacklist websites as we come across them and ease permissions to certain sites over the summer holidays if requested when the device doesn’t need to be used for educational purposes.”

Jamf Safe Internet is a fully GDPR compliant solution as it doesn’t share the names of students who try to access inappropriate sites but rather flags the sites they tried to access anonymously so the school can choose to block them.
